First Aid

Many people don’t know what to do in case they witness an acid attack. There is not enough awareness on how to treat a chemical burn. Attacks happen very spontaneously and the only way the victim can be saved is if everyone around the victim knows what to do and acts fast.

Many people don’t know what to do in case they witness an acid attack. There is not enough awareness on how to treat a chemical burn. Attacks happen very spontaneously and the only way the victim can be saved is if everyone around the victim knows what to do and acts fast.

If you witness an attack, the first thing to do would be to assess the situation while keeping your own safety in mind.

Without getting in contact with the substance, try and wash it off the victim

You should use room temperature water to wash the chemical off.

The water should be poured in a steady stream continuously before you do anything else.

Call for help, an ambulance or alert the authorities.

Do the above while keeping the water flow constant.

Water is the only substance that will effectively help the victim.

After the acid is washed off, applying an alkali solution would be useful to neutralize the acid. (Baking soda and water)

The victim should be taken to a hospital as soon as possible.

Remove all jewellery or accessories/clothes that might have come in contact with the chemical to avoid further burning the skin

EVERY second after an attack is crucial. As a bystander the life of the victim is solely in your hands. If all first aid is carried out without wasting any time, it can benefit the future of the victim tremendously. It is very important that people are aware of what is to be done in such a situation. Also keeping your own distance while carrying out first aid is very important. You don’t want to get the substance on yourself as it can cause immediate burns. It is very important to be proactive if such a situation arises.
